BIO

Through years of intense collaboration, Kristoffer Vejslev, Martin Brunbjerg, and Rasmus Elhøj have crafted a distinctive and innovative sound within the standard jazz repertoire. Their music is an explosive mix of Nordic minimalism, raw energy, and a punk-like approach that breathes new life into both classic jazz works and their own interpretations of more obscure compositions. Inspired by artists like Thelonious Monk and Lennie Tristano, the trio transforms their deeply personal approach into something universally gripping and consistently unpredictable.

Bassist Martin Brunbjerg and drummer Rasmus Elhøj met during their studies at the conservatory in Odense, where their musical chemistry instantly sparked. When guitarist Kristoffer Vejslev returned to Copenhagen after four years at the conservatory in Amsterdam—where he studied under jazz guitar icons such as Jesse van Ruller and Peter Bernstein—the trio was formed. What began as a musical playground has evolved into a project with a unique musical expression and an exciting place on the Danish jazz scene. They are known for their ability to balance sparkling interplay with unpredictability and spontaneity, always keeping the listener on their toes.

On their upcoming debut album, the trio expands their sonic universe with three prominent guest musicians. German bass clarinet virtuoso Rudi Mahall brings his playful, eccentric style and deep roots in the European avant-garde, adding a raw edge and unmatched energy to the music. Swedish alto saxophonist Hannes Bennich contributes a warm tone and complex improvisations, underscoring his status as one of the most exciting young musicians in the Nordic region. Finally, acclaimed Danish pianist Simon Toldam enriches the trio with his playfulness and unique ability to move seamlessly between the minimalist and the explosive. The album presents the trio both as a quartet with Toldam and as a quintet with Bennich and Mahall—two vastly different but equally captivating constellations.

The trio is also involved in some of the most acclaimed projects on the Copenhagen jazz scene, including Little North, En Garde!, and Red Gazelle Trio. Their innovative approach and technical prowess have earned them praise both in Denmark and internationally. With their unique sound and ability to balance tradition and innovation, Vejslev/Brunbjerg/Elhøj is a project that constantly pushes the boundaries of what modern jazz can be.
